Just bought Far Cry today for $5. Hopefully, too, companies will start optimizing better as hardware requirements become so much greater than what standard comps offer. CoD4 will run on my 3 yr old laptop, so that's one additional sale that game had.

I pirated Crysis, saw it for what it was (a glorified dev kit) and did not buy it. However, I downloaded CoD4, saw it for what it was (a really fun game) and bought it. It's not about illegal/legal.

        Its about fair evaluation of a product before you spend hard earned cash on it. I can test drive a car all afternoon, I can sample a meal at any restaurant, and I download games to decide whether they are worth it. If only i could have tried Assasin's Creed for the 360 before I bought it, it was so bad...

        And please don't talk about 'investing in hardware'. It's a pretty cheap investment nowadays.

Just because the way current technology is and distribution being easy when it comes to software doesn't mean you can download full versions of games for free. When you buy a game, you are mostly paying for the game, not the DVD and associated distribution costs (distro/manu costs are around 7% http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061221-8479 ... ) Hell, with Steam and other similar services, you are paying for server costs.

          Download the damn demo and if you want to see more, buy the damn thing. Like cars, homes, TV's, computers, and so on, you can't take them for free and then decide to pay for if you think it sucks or not. Games are IP and you should have to pay for the full version.

          And don't give me crap about it doesn't cost them anything. If you are playing the full version of a game and pirated it, you stole the game and SHOULD be paying for it. It not about whether or not you are a "lost sale" or not. Whether or not you like the game does not determine the price or if you have the pay. The fact is you HAVE the FULL game and there WAS NO SALE, it was stolen.

As for cheap hardware, I have a laptop that cost a fair bit when I went to college, and I've been on a college budget for the past few years. I didn't buy Crysis, but I have no qualms about paying $5 for a piece of software I've played before (demo, plus the crappy ad-supported version from back in the day). I played the CoD4 demo and saw that it worked and was fun. Plus, my university hands out honor court warnings for downloading too much via bittorrent.

They'll let you exchange a faulty copy for the same game or give you store credit if even that. They also usually won't take a game back because you thought it sucked. I was given a pirated copy of CoD4 and thought it was an amazing game on so many levels. The gameplay, story, how well it was optimized, so I went out and bought it.

Just because you can't take a game back doesn't mean you are allowed to download it illegally. Many people here may say if the game they pirated is good they will buy it but most won't. Just because one product has a certain return policy doesn't mean other products that don't are fair game for stealing. If TVs and other such products could be copied in the same way software can, I assure you the policy would be different.

          CoD4 had a demo, you didn't even need to get the pirated version from whomever. If you have a console, you can also rent games as well before you buy (or decide not to buy). The point is, to play the content that is only in the full version, you should be paying, no matter what. Trial and demo content are out there for a reason.
        • AzureRise, on 05/23/2008, -0/+1Lots of games don't have demos and downloading is the only way to find out. However I didn't even download Call of Duty 4. It was literally handed to me. I was never into the Call of Duty series before and that got me into it and I've bought a couple Call of Duty games since. Most people also don't to go through the trouble of renting, but I have found a decent solution.

          You can legally download full games with trial periods and then purchase the full version if you want to. Either by using your credit card or going out to the store to buy a copy of the game. If you want after you buy it at the store you can even just enter the serial and continue from where you were. I think this is a huge step in the right direction and many people who resort to pirating to see if they like a game should try it. It's a torrent service and their torrents are always extremely fast.

Much as I like the fact that my PC can render the pants off a PS3 or a 360, I still love to play Warcraft 3 and starcraft which were made years ago.
        Note to PC developers...instead of CRYing about how people are pirating your game (when they probably would not have bought it anyway) why don't you look at the people that are doing it right (HINT: Blizzard, Valve, Gas Powered Games) and follow their lead.

I just wanted to point that out. If a game sucks and people don't want it, why are people pirating it then? I don't think the worse a game is the more it is pirated. I would argue that the better a game is and the more popular it is, the more it is pirated.

Mainly the point comes from it not being as fun when pirated, and is totally worth the money not being spent on other games.

      One of the features that only barely made it into Yahtzee's review is the bunny hopping. Several secrets require the use of bunny hopping to get to, which in my book gives this game an instant A.

I was always either scared ***** or wondering wtf am I going, a mix of terrifying combat with mind numbingly boring aimless wandering in between, couldn't handle the emotional rollercoaster. there were definitely some nice weapons though so for anyone who likes those kind of horror shooters it's not bad, atmosphere and art is top. and he was right the soul collecting mechanic kind of sucked.

I like a certain suspension of disbelief in my games, especially first person shooters. I want crazy over-the-top enemies and weapons (ie, a gun that shoots shurikens and lightning). I want campy dialog and bad puns a la Duke Nukem.

    If you want games to be 100% authentic to real life, then maybe you should... oh I don't know... DO SOMETHING IN REAL LIFE!

      • yohnstoppable, on 05/21/2008, -1/+6I think people take digging and burying too seriously. It's a simple mouse click to say whether you agree with someone or not. If no one agrees with you, then you get buried to *****. Not a big deal, really
        • bigsteve, on 05/22/2008, -0/+3I sort of prefer the slashdot model. There's no (Score: -1, Disagree) there. Comments are modded by the quality of their argument, the points they bring up, what they bring to the discussion. Even unpopular views can get high scores if they don't sound like they're written by a 6th grader.

          It's less of a popularity contest, and allows a reasonable system by which you can set a setting to tune out the noise. You can set a score threshold for comment viewing here on digg too, but it's useless as you'll still just get someone shouting something that everyone dugg up because it's popular.
