Sports attendance up, hot dog - beer spending down
reuters.com — By Ben Klayman CHICAGO (Reuters) - A couple of times a year, David Holzhammer drives more than 200 miles from his home in Iowa City, Iowa, to see the Chicago Cubs play baseball. That is a luxury he is not giving up, despite high gas prices and other...

- shawnanigans, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Utilitarianism? Actually I never thought about the connection of the two, as both economics and utilitarianism being results of the Scottish Enlightenment, from thinkers like Hume and Smith.
- goofygarber, on 07/01/2008, -10/+3I love a good baseball game but god damn if its not boring without beer.
- kidathinnes, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1so you really don't "love" baseball. you just love beer. I mean come on, what is boring when you have beer?
- Whaines, on 07/01/2008, -0/+41Maybe if it wasn't five dollars a hot dog I'd buy one...
- Ajajadude, on 07/01/2008, -2/+5I wouldn't mind $5 hot dogs if they were $5 hot dogs. As in, not soggy, cheap-ass hot dogs that tend to give you the runs.
- blackhappy, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1$6 for a hot dog at Safeco Field and like $9 for a beer!
- palmer, on 07/01/2008, -4/+1WEREN'T
- SDM187, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1burnt kosher dogs with the burnt onions at comiskey are ***** boss... just saying. miss half price dog days on thursdays tho. Damn world series win, why must you be such a cruel mistress... (LoL @ cubs fans)
- n0t0kayipr0mis3, on 07/01/2008, -7/+8Well the cubs are having a great season, they're one of the top teams right now. The atmosphere at Wrigleyfield is so enjoyable, the bleachers, the terrace seats, the game itself. i think that's why it has people going back to it.
- DuggDowner, on 07/01/2008, -3/+4Damn straight.

why is this on the front page?- kentifer, on 07/01/2008, -0/+6The general digg populus is concerned about the economy, and this is a case study of what is happening.
- Ajajadude, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3Because we all on Digg thought it would bother you if it made it to the frontpage.
- PittPanthersFan, on 07/01/2008, -0/+16Cost of beer per gallon > cost of gasoline per gallon
- BenKenobi88, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4Cost of beer per cup even...
- dangerdeej, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Aparently Reuters didn't check in the outfield bleachers for the 5000 empty cups of Bud Light and Old Style. The last time I was up there I counted 35 cups of beer between 6 people in the row in front of me.
- DuggDowner, on 07/01/2008, -0/+8Sounds to me like one of those guys wussed out of drinking his 6th beer.
- jefbob, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Someone had to stay sober enough to drive home...

- 9bpm9, on 07/01/2008, -0/+4So you're one of those people who spends his time watching what other people do at the baseball game rather than watching the game?
- DuggDowner, on 07/01/2008, -0/+8Sounds to me like one of those guys wussed out of drinking his 6th beer.
- DJTre, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Everyone has to buy gas to get to and home from the sporting event, they aren't gonna waste it on beer and wieners.
- Schda, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1Not necessarily, some of us take public transportation. I went to the game last night and took a train in to the game and back. I didn't buy any beer or food, but I don't usually buy anything anways. In fact in the probably 60-70 games I've been to since it's been legal for me to drink I've never had a beer. For the price of 3.2 crap beer I can buy a six pack of real tasty beer.

- BrentDPayne, on 07/01/2008, -2/+6It's funny that my personal finances are the exact opposite. "Sports attendance is down -- hot dog and beer spending up!"
- tehsilentcircus, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2Dugg; you and me both!! :D
- GeauxLSU, on 07/01/2008, -8/+3Great....Americans will be healthier without eating that crap anyway...now if only they would PLAY a sport instead of sitting on their fat asses watching people exercise!
- 9bpm9, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2So I can assume you're not a pound overweight and spend an hour a day exercising while working eight hours a day?
- xjeffx, on 07/01/2008, -2/+2You can assume that about me. What are you saying? That because Americans are busy, being overweight, out of shape, and having poor eating habits should be acceptable???
- soupdawg30, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1What he is saying is that when you work fulltime it's harder to workout everyday.
- GeauxLSU, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2If you have time to watch...you have time to do! BTW- sorry for over characterizing….watching baseball is not watching people exercise!
And YES….I do exercise everyday….I get up an hour early for work in order to do so and my productivity has increased!
- 9bpm9, on 07/01/2008, -1/+2So I can assume you're not a pound overweight and spend an hour a day exercising while working eight hours a day?
- tpv2066, on 07/01/2008, -2/+3Is this really surprising in a possible recession and a Bud Light at Fenway Park (for instance) costs frigging 7.50 a glass!
- DuggDowner, on 07/01/2008, -2/+1Dugg down for having been to Fenway Park.
- nemojonze, on 07/01/2008, -1/+1thanks .08 !
- m8ymerc1, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3$4 for a hot dog and $6 bucks big ass glass of foam is why I eat before I go to a game and bring water with me. However, I will be a schmitter (instant heartattack)!
- DuggDowner, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1What is this water you speak of?
- cap11235, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5By water, he means vodka.
- soupdawg30, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2That's my favorite water.
- DuggDowner, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1What is this water you speak of?
- sgtpppr, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3The price of stadium food has gone up more over the past 10 years than gas has. It's ridiculous that they charge $15+ for a hotdog and a watered down beer.
- codered1322, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1A 16 oz beer at Shea Stadium is $8. So painful.
- pamon, on 07/01/2008, -0/+5gee... $5 hot dog and $10 beer vs $5 gas for car... hmmm... wonder where the prioirites are... lower beer prices and hot dog costs and you'll sell more... greedy stadium and team owners. not real rocket science there
- birdly, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1As this thread gets longer, the hot dog prices get higher.
- theandy1, on 07/01/2008, -0/+3I don't see the point in going to a baseball game without getting at least 1 beer and a hot dog. However, I think it's best to get to a game an hour or two early, find a bar close by with good game day prices, get your fill, and then go to the game.
- Barackalypse, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1You know what annoyed me more than the $4 the hot dog cost me? The fact that the bun was completely crushed from being crammed into a warming drawer for God knows how long before I bought it. Are there still ballparks where I can get my dog right off the grill so my bun isn't smashed? Also, I hate those fans that show up in the 2nd inning and then leave in the 7th to get to the bars before the game is even over. Those always seem to be the people than need to get up and walk past me every damn inning.
- midejitsu, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1You shouldn’t go to Dodgers games then. Go see the Angels. I heard fans stay until the end there.
- blackhappy, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I wish Safeco was one of the stadiums that have all you can eat seats!
- naiku, on 07/01/2008, -0/+16.25 $ for a beer at wrigley...1 of the many bars across the street sells for 2$.
- soupdawg30, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1This just in: "Sky is blue, Sun is hot"
- Millsee, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1Just you guys wait until it's the same price as the UK...it's grim :-(
- Jittah, on 07/01/2008, -0/+2Maybe if they had a real beer selection other than miller lite or bud light only, people would feel more inclined to buy it, either way the prices for it are exorbitant, and i can only imagine how much a beer that doesnt make me want to punch the owner of anheuser busch in the face would cost.
- salmacis, on 07/01/2008, -5/+1I went to my first baseball game (Dodgers) last month, since I was visiting the States. I decided to get a beer and some food. Being vegetarian, the only food I could eat was the nachos. Ugh! I still shudder at the memory. There was some hot yellow stuff, which I honestly thought was mustard. It was utterly foul. I couldn't believe it when someone told me it was supposed to be cheese! And as for the beer, it was the most watered down piss I've ever had the misfortune to drink, and I've drunk Carling Black Label in the past. Overall, for $10 I had inedible food and undrinkable beer. Bargain!
- kidathinnes, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1So I'm guessing you have never seen melted cheese before. It's usually hot, yellowish in color. I actually think the nachos are alright at ballgames. Get some jalapenos on them, and they are perfect. I can say I have never been to a Dodgers game, so I don't know exactly what you ate.
I can agree with the beer thing. Most parks have Bud or Miller, which I utterly despise. Or you have Wrigley's Old Style. The worst ballpark beer around.
- kidathinnes, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1So I'm guessing you have never seen melted cheese before. It's usually hot, yellowish in color. I actually think the nachos are alright at ballgames. - CherrySmith123, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1it IS really expensive, but its the same way at the movies and amusement parks..............you kinda have to expect that when u go...........amusement parks and games i dont mind.............but i def hit up the gas station for snacks before a movie, screw that.....im not paying those prices at a damn movie theater!!
- wattersm, on 07/01/2008, -0/+1I went to a Red Wings game recently and I didn't buy a damn thing. $8.50 for a beer and pizza was like $5 a slice, it's ridiculous.
