- IDIGTHEDIGG, on 05/20/2008, -2/+56Great story, glad for him, many people didnt think he would ever pitch again
- RedS0x, on 05/20/2008, -12/+10I know, it's not only great because it's a no-hitter, but because of what he overcame to get in this situation. Oh and Yankee fans, please don't be disrespectful and start a flamewar here, I hope even your hats will come off to this moment.
- jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -16/+8Why did you bring up Yankees fans? Since you just started a flame war (and what a not so clever way to do so, I must admit) I'll throw something out there.
For every douche Yankees fan that takes baseball too seriously there are 10 Red Sox fans who are just as bad or worse. You, for example, appear to be one of those Red Sox fans that I was talking about just now.- chanop, on 05/20/2008, -8/+5It's true, Boston fans are rediculous.
- stellarceltic, on 05/20/2008, -5/+5I have found that the ratio of douchey Yankee fans is far greater than that of the douchey Red Sox fans.
Go Mets. - jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2But do you live in New York? You'd probably think differently if you came from a neutral area (Connecticut) where the Red Sox fans have always been more ridiculous and went to school in full-on Red Sox territory.
- seabass10, on 05/20/2008, -1/+10But heres the dilemma. You had the chance to be the bigger man and just tip your cap and not comment but instead you decided to start a tirade against red sox fans. I'm a huge Bosox fan but I still admire the players on the yankees and anything else that is remarkable in baseball. The story here is not that a Red Sox pitcher threw a no-hitter. its the fact that a cancer survivor threw a no-hitter, regardless of what team he is on. It is a feat that should be respected by all baseball fans.
- jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -6/+3I only said something because RedS0x instigated, so I didn't "start" anything. And if you look down another Red Sox fan came along and said something about Phil Hughes.
I'm a Yankees fan and I respect the abilities of the Red Sox players, management, and coaches. I think that their park is probably the coolest in all of baseball. But their fans are just too obnoxious for me to stand.
I agree that the story is about a cancer survivor threw a no hitter. And I admire that. But the fact remains that RedS0x up there came along and instigated. - acosta814, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4I am a huge Yankees fan, but when you see something like this happen in baseball it great for everybody. Even those God Damn Red Sox!!!
- RedS0x, on 05/20/2008, -1/+3Thank you, that's what I was trying to say.
- jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -6/+3I only said something because RedS0x instigated, so I didn't "start" anything. And if you look down another Red Sox fan came along and said something about Phil Hughes.

- redscofield, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4check out survinggrady.com... they've got the uncut video of the end... man, that is straight up some emotional stuff... i teared up...
so many good moments last night...
- RedS0x, on 05/20/2008, -12/+10I know, it's not only great because it's a no-hitter, but because of what he overcame to get in this situation. Oh and Yankee fans, please don't be disrespectful and start a flamewar here, I hope even your hats will come off to this moment.
- tycsteel, on 05/20/2008, -10/+4Thats easy. just playin thats pretty amazing
- gropo, on 05/20/2008, -1/+5That's nothing. In 1970 Dock Ellis pitched a no-hitter... tripping on LSD.
http://www.sirbacon.org/4membersonly/docellis.htm - tycsteel, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1maybe jon was too
- gropo, on 05/20/2008, -1/+5That's nothing. In 1970 Dock Ellis pitched a no-hitter... tripping on LSD.
- Skitzzo, on 05/20/2008, -3/+75And before we get all the "Well it was against the Royals" comments, they're not half bad this year.
- jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -2/+32Anyone who pitches a no hitter against a major league baseball team accomplished something. I don't care if it's the Devil Rays ... oh ***** they're good this year too.
- ssn697, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7I have seen one no hitter (Nolan Ryan, his last) and two one hitters in my lifetime. I have to say, THRILLING to be there.
I only wish I was there for this one. Quite the top shelf no hitter.
I can't say enough about this young man's heart (and arm!). What a great story.- ssn697, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I didn't notice until this morning that Digg didn't save my edit. I was at Nolan Ryan's SECOND to last no hitter (against the A's).
Damn you, buggy comment system!!!
- ssn697, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I didn't notice until this morning that Digg didn't save my edit. I was at Nolan Ryan's SECOND to last no hitter (against the A's).
- TimTheSloth, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1They've also dropped the "Devil" part and are just called the Rays now.
- ssn697, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7I have seen one no hitter (Nolan Ryan, his last) and two one hitters in my lifetime. I have to say, THRILLING to be there.
- jmblur, on 05/20/2008, -0/+16The only other pitcher that's ever thrown a no-no against KC was Nolan Ryan. Not bad company there...
- JohnFrum, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1Ding Ding Ding.
You just won the baseball geek of the day award!
Jim, tell the man what he's won.
- JohnFrum, on 05/20/2008, -3/+1Ding Ding Ding.
- benhollister, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2My Tigers can't beat 'em :/
- akatherder, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1I was going to point out the Tig's 0-6 record against KC. They would be first in their division if they won all the games against KC. Instead they're last.
- wukillabee, on 05/20/2008, -9/+2its still the royals..
- helloiambrad, on 05/20/2008, -0/+0In case you haven't noticed, the Royals are decent this year...and on their way up.
- getisboy, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4actually they are below 500, making them more than half bad
- hairydotus, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1they are all still professional athletes
- gearsofwar05, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Anyone who throws a no-no in the MLB is great don't care what. 130 pitchs 27+ batters and not one hit. Its pretty damn good not hang one or get burnt on a bad pitch.
- jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -2/+32Anyone who pitches a no hitter against a major league baseball team accomplished something. I don't care if it's the Devil Rays ... oh ***** they're good this year too.
- shoestore, on 05/20/2008, -2/+23Figures i dropped him from my fantasy roster yesterday :/

- bigredgpk, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5The box score is the story:
J Lester (W, 3-2) 9.0 0 0 0 2 9 0
Those are some pretty nice numbers there
- bigredgpk, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5The box score is the story:
- Mark4483, on 05/20/2008, -1/+51Red sox fan or not, you have to admit this kid is a great story. He deserves it.
- kpmoore, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3It really could not have happened to a better guy. Brought tears to my eyes.
- ssn697, on 05/20/2008, -0/+11I have him on my fantasy team, just for the good Karma. Couldn't happen to a better guy...
- Trifold, on 05/20/2008, -1/+68Meanwhile in the Bronx, Phil Hughes just gave up a homerun to the janitor.
- NeoCortex, on 05/20/2008, -1/+15But it's the Yankee janitor, so he was probably 'roiding anyway.
- robEstyles, on 05/20/2008, -10/+2As a yankee fan I must say that that comment is a fabrication. ...... Ian Kennedy gave up a homerun to the janitor. And here is the obligatory Red Sox sucks!
- jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -16/+4Heh. The Royals/Red Sox game was too crowded in the cafeteria so I watched the Cubs/Atros during lunch. I saw an inside the park home run instead.
- midejitsu, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Don’t know why you’re getting burried. That Geovany Soto inside-the-parker was a thing of beauty, even though the umpires were wrong and should have ruled it as an outright homer.
- chrisgeleven, on 05/20/2008, -0/+23No one deserved it more. I have been following him since his days in the minor leagues (even saw him pitch for the Sea Dogs in Double-AA a few years back).
You have to be pretty special to beat cancer, win the clinching game in a world series, and throw a no-hitter.- holzp, on 05/20/2008, -0/+7Think of how lucky Portland is, 3 of the last five pitchers of MLB no-hitters came through the Sea Dogs. The first one was Anibal Sanchez who was traded with Hanley Ramirez to the Marlins for Beckett (himself a former Sea Dog) and Lowell.
That makes in the last two years from the same AA club:
Two rookies of the year (Ramirez & Pedoria) Perhaps Ellsbury this year?
Three no hitters (Sanchez, Buchholz & Lester)
And Josh Beckett too!
Best seats in the house are $9! It's good to be a baseball fan in Maine!- nuclearpenguins, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Amen to this. I catch a Dogs game whenever I can. Great ballpark and atmosphere!
- jcm267, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Yeah... you guys got it good. My local team lost its affiliation with the Yankees and is now a Giants affiliate. No one cares about them now. I think you really need to have a local team affiliation like the Yankees, Red Sox, or even the Mets to keep most people interested in the team.
- ssn697, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Hey, Ryan Braun played 10 games out here in Montana, on his way up. We are claiming him ;-)
- nuclearpenguins, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2Amen to this. I catch a Dogs game whenever I can. Great ballpark and atmosphere!

- zioxide, on 05/20/2008, -1/+24Congratulations to Jon. His pitching was dominant tonight. Buchholz was great in his no-no last September but Lester took it to an even higher level tonight. In the later innings he had stuff we haven't seen in Boston since Pedro back in 02-03.
His story is amazing too. Eighteen months ago he was fighting cancer, and he battled back to win the deciding game four of the World Series last year, and now he throws a no hitter.
I think Tito put it best when he said, "He's not just a good kid because he threw a no hitter. He's a good kid just because he's a good kid."- hrhs556x, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1i doubt anyone who dugg you up watched both no-hitters. Bucholz definitly had better stuff for his no hitter, his curve and change were untouchable. Obviously Lester was too but Bucholz was downright nasty.
- zioxide, on 05/20/2008, -0/+28On a related note for people who care about stats: This was the 4th no hitter caught by Jason Varitek, which is a MLB record. He caught Hideo Nomo's in 2001, Derek Lowe's in 2002, Clay Buchholz's in 2007, and Jon Lester's tonight. He's also caught three 1-hitters in which the no-nos were broken up in the 9th (Schilling in 2007, Wakefield in 2001, Pedro in 2000).
- kenij, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6I'm still mad at that Heathcliff Slocumb deal. Good for 'tek though.
/mariners fan
Edit: Just to add, Schilling's no hitter was broken up because he didn't throw the pitch Varitek wanted him to throw. - BigPapi, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1It could've been his 5th. Nomo almost threw two no-hitters that year. I was at the 1-hit game in which Nomo was one hit shy of a perfect game. It was some random double in the 5th inning or something.
- matrix121, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Just another reason why the Red Sox could win another World Series this year.
- kenij, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6I'm still mad at that Heathcliff Slocumb deal. Good for 'tek though.
- WVUChrisF, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5Great story, I'm glad he's on my fantasy team.
- NeoCortex, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5I saw his previous start in person at Camden Yards. He pitched an awesome game only to have the bullpen blow. To think, I was only one start away from seeing a no-hitter in person.
- kenij, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5As a Mariners fan, I have to say congratulations to Jon Lester! To come back like he did, and then pitch a no hitter is incredible. Great story.

- NachoBusiness, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5Nice link while it lasts... MLB hates Youtube. Which is idiotic... people watching short MLB clips on Youtube only helps their product.
- DephexTwin, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4***** MLB.... do they think I'm going to buy a DVD of special baseball moments as a result of not being able to watch this stuff on Youtube?
- witcompe, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2And it's gone....
- NachoBusiness, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5Nice link while it lasts... MLB hates Youtube. Which is idiotic... people watching short MLB clips on Youtube only helps their product.

- jmas9, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Im going to the game tonight, why couldn't this have waited a day???? :) Oh well, hats off to Jon, he pitched a gem last night... Maybe Ill get to see Manny hit his 500th.
- matschig, on 05/20/2008, -4/+1Manny 'boom boom' rayman mancina? He doesn't play ball anymore.
- aaronbourret, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1You get to see Marsterson's major league debut, so it's not all bad...
- kapkorn, on 05/20/2008, -1/+6I'm a Royals fan but hey, good for him!
- serif69, on 05/20/2008, -5/+1As a Yankee fan, I offer my condolences, and, this year, my empathy as well.
- zioxide, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3The Royals have a better record than the Yankees...
- serif69, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Hence the empathy...
- krets, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1How have the Yankees done against the Royals so far this year?
- zioxide, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3The Royals have a better record than the Yankees...
- serif69, on 05/20/2008, -5/+1As a Yankee fan, I offer my condolences, and, this year, my empathy as well.
- stukdog, on 05/20/2008, -2/+14Varitek gets a lot of credit for these things, though Lester was impressive last night.
My son isn't yet one and he's been able to see two Red Sox no hitters in his life. Quite impressive. - serif69, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Brings back memories of Jim Abbott's no hitter. Different circumstances to be sure, but equally uplifting.
- Yellowdog428, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2an even better story. [video]
http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/gameday_recap.js ... - dleturno, on 05/20/2008, -17/+3Big deal. I'm so sick of ESPN clamoring for Red Sox stories I could just puke all over the TV. I agree that they needed to cut to the final inning so that America could see if it happened but there was no need to keep showing the celebration when the Cubs and Astros were in a 3-2 ballgame going into the 7th inning. A no-hitter is neat and all but if it was the Royals pitcher throwing it, it might get 5 minutes dedicated to it on BBT. Die ESPN.
- redscofield, on 05/20/2008, -2/+6Man, i thought it was story book when he pitched brilliantly in this last world series... This should fuel the Sox for quite a while... and it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy...
Red Sox Nation Member - dcmcderm, on 05/20/2008, -14/+2Buried. All positive Red Sox news must be suppressed at all costs.
- damnclem, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I'm so ashamed to be a Royals fan anymore. :(
- Hockey37, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5Look on the bright side, at least you're not a Pirates fan.
- talonstriker, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Eh you guys have a better offense than the Nats. I have to worry about my team getting no hit every night.
But our pitching is awesome...so I still hope for a decent season. - krets, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Why? They're getting better in case you haven't noticed.
- jefbob, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Could be worse, you could be a Cincinnati fan :/. They just had a good weekend, but that isn't going to last. I have just about given up on sports.
- aguynamedjoe36, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1jefbob,
you have to believe. adam dunn has been playing like an animal lately, phillips is solid, and paul janish might be my new favorite.
our starters have been pitching well... if we could get our middle relief together on this trip out west, then we will be a force come june.
i was depressed two weeks ago too, but when i saw that sweep of the indians and dunn's walkoff, i began believing again.
- aguynamedjoe36, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1jefbob,
- vanzan, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3Why did he choose to do against my Royals!!
- john2kx, on 05/20/2008, -16/+1Not to downplay this great accomplishment, but it _was_ against the KC Royals...
- keithgplayer, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1In case you haven't noticed, the Royals are in contention for their division.
- murphygr, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1Not to trash your opinion, but they'd gone 6 for their last 7...
- john2kx, on 05/20/2008, -0/+1owned.. shows how much I know about baseball. :
***** worthless sport, anyway.
- reuscel, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Quit showing off, Jon.
I'm kidding of course. This kid's career is on a good path. Keep up the good work, Jon. - jcolby, on 05/20/2008, -3/+2And I missed it because I was watching Dancing with the stars...Damn!
- DephexTwin, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3You are officially not a man anymore.
- talonstriker, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5Good for Lester....but the biggest winner is ESPN which has another reason to show Red Sox/Yankees/Cubs/Mets/Dodgers highlights all day long.
- troymccluresf, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2No kidding. They cut into the Cubs/Astors game to show the ninth inning of this, and I could just imagine 40 ESPN marketing execs furiously masturbating in their cubicles as the Red Sox threw a no-hitter live on their netowrk.
Note- I'm not knocking the accomplishment. Congrats to Mr. Lester for this and for the last few years.
- Unearthly, on 05/20/2008, -5/+0Definitely a tip of the cap! I hate the Red Sox like poison ... but man, Lester FTW!
- shauncorleone, on 05/20/2008, -5/+1Good for him. Now trade him, Sox, so I don't have to despise him because of your overbearing fanbase. If no Yanks or Sawx pitcha threw a no-no ever again, the world would be a better place. Though I suppose this individual accomplishment is ok so long as the Rays win the division.
- DephexTwin, on 05/20/2008, -1/+2Oh no!! The fanbase is so overbearing! :(
- username484767, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1wow, nice!
- pat0neill, on 05/20/2008, -1/+1yaaaaaa budday
- Tokyosexwhale, on 05/20/2008, -1/+4Go Sox! Poop on the Yankees!
- frankingeneral, on 05/20/2008, -0/+5I'm a Yankees fan through and through, but this is a phenomenal story. Yeah, there have been a couple of hundred no-nos in the history of baseball, so this normally isn't THAT big of a deal, but Lester was battling cancer this time last year, what an inspirational story.
- cadmiumpaint, on 05/20/2008, -0/+4Amazing to throw a no hitter in a park like Fenway that's so hitter friendly. More amazing when you consider his situation. Good stuff.
- superdude112, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1lester is the man. Fenway erupted when he was retired. It was amazing to be there.
- ike6116, on 05/20/2008, -0/+3I was there last night, around the 6th inning we realized the potential for something special.
No one took a seat in the 9th inning, it was nuts.
Best 47 bucks for 6 beers I ever spent. - Bizdorph, on 05/20/2008, -8/+2No hitters mean little, if anything.
Don't get me wrong, it's great that he has come back from cancer and is still able to do what he loves as well as he does.
However, the pitcher could throw the worst game of his life--the batters could hit every single pitch--and as long as the hits never result in a base being taken, it doesn't count as a hit. So the statistic doesn't really mean that much.
What means more is the number of people he struck out, and as I remember from the highlights of this game, it was a considerable number.
So I have a problem with the name "no hitter", not with the guy. - benjio, on 05/20/2008, -10/+1Anyone affiliated with the American League is not worth mentioning...cancer or no.
- Xander512, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1annnd what exactly is your reasoning behind that?
- mxpx5678, on 05/20/2008, -0/+6Jacoby Ellsbury really saved the no hitter for him with his diving catch in the outfield for an out.
- Deku, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1Every no-hitter has at least one amazing defensive play to keep it going
- ametory, on 05/20/2008, -2/+1Anyone care to explain what a no hitter is for the baseball impaired.
- Fast05GT, on 05/20/2008, -0/+2a no hitter is when a pitcher completes a game without allowing a hit, but there can be walks and errors. A Perfect Game is when there are no hits, walks or errors.

- MrPillowPants, on 05/21/2008, -0/+1 What a great story
To battle cancer, and then throw a no-hitter in a major league game. I would no doubt cry like a baby. - ohryankelley, on 05/21/2008, -0/+0I was at the game, it was amazing.
