- 1randomguyO8, on 05/10/2008, -7/+1I prefer make more money. More money = more stuff.
- Black6x, on 05/10/2008, -0/+5Such a simple rule, and yet one that so many people fail to follow. It's one of the reasons credit debt is sinking people.
- cquinnd, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2Which people? The ones that know how to spell: "spend less than you earn"; or the ones who know punctuation: "spend less, then you earn"?
- twrife, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2than than than than than
- 1randomguyO8, on 05/10/2008, -0/+7Anyone get depressed reading this?
- AgentVladimir, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2How does Reader's Digest stuff keep getting popular? I though it was all a scam that got posted through your letterbox.
- soupr, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Financial education was so bad for most of us. Listening to all the talk recently, I'm guessing the next gen will be 100% more clued up than us.
- merien, on 05/10/2008, -2/+2Short version: if you need something compare prices and go for the cheapest option. No real tips or information in this article.
- jmnugent, on 05/10/2008, -4/+20Are people really THIS dumb that they need an article to tell them to "look for cheaper options" ???... wtf america ?
Here are some ideas:
Q: Gas for your SUV is to expensive
A: Get rid of your farking SUV
Q: You're used to buying pricey food at the grocery store.
A: QUIT buying pricey food at the grocery store.
Q: Your son is moving away to college, did you know you can "talk for free (with him) over the internet" ???
A: Holy *****, really?.. What is this "internet" you speak of ?
Jesus H, we are so doomed.- cplusplus, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3People with SUV should really trade it in quick. With the price of gas rising nobody is going to want one soon.
- bdbr, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Its easy to say "just get rid of your SUV", but people paid a lot of money for those (and probably borrowed most of that), and the resale value is now crap. They would often lose thousands of dollars by replacing it early versus just paying more for gas.
Probably the best thing SUV owners can do is just cut back on driving, and try to schedule activities to reduce trips.
- dilbertmouse, on 05/10/2008, -0/+13Got annoyed by the length of the article, so here's a condensed version:
1. Expensive gas: Use www.gasbuddy.com or www.gaspricewatch.com; Carefully use credit cards with rebates; Check your tire pressure weekly
2. Expensive groceries: Order groceries and staples online [www.safeway.com, www.peapod.com, www.freshdirect.com and www.netgrocer.com]
3. Expensive kids: Try freecycling. [freecycle.org, freesharing.org, sharingisgiving.org]
4. Expensive phone bills: Use VoIP. [skype.com, google.com/talk, jajah.com]
5. Expensive spouse: Shop online. [shopping.com, jellyfish.com]
6. Expensive airfare: Shop online. [Farecompare.com, Kayak.com]; Forcast fares [Farecast.com]
7. Expensive cell phone: Sell or trade your cell contract [celltradeusa.com]
8. Expensive credit card / mortgage: Watch your credit report [annualcreditreport.com]; Monitor loan rates [myfico.com]
9. Living paycheck to paycheck: Use a financial planner [garrettplanningnetwork.com]
10. Expensive entertainment habits: Get together with like minded folks [meetup.com]- 1randomguyO8, on 05/10/2008, -0/+610. Expensive entertainment habits: Get internet + Bit-torrent?
- Pharoid, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3Lol! The snarky comments from Digg users were far more entertaining than the article. Here are my tips for cheap-ass living, mostly revolving around food which tends to be my greatest expenditure:
1. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are filling and pretty darn tasty - add some chips and you're set
2. Bisquick and beer! I don't know about you but the milk in my fridge went bad two months ago. Use beer instead and make beer biscuits. Tastes great
3. Baked potatoes - put barbecue sauce on them, salsa, cheese & Bacos, whatever. Cheap and filling
4. Ramen! - Still 4 for a dollar and has been for 20 years! Go easy on the strange chemical flavoring packet
At this point, you should be seriously carb loaded.- WoollyMittens, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1Suicidal tips. Mmm...
- wattersm, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Yeah, the staple foods are usually pretty cheap. Beans and rice, rice and beans, like Dave says.
- Look4Truth, on 05/10/2008, -2/+1#1 - Federal Reserve globalist bankers
- WoollyMittens, on 05/10/2008, -1/+1So the only thing we can do is save our pennies to better serve our corporate overlords.
- xstarsprinklesx, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Yeah, the tips themselves are pretty much common sense, but I hadn't heard of some of the links they included. Dugg up for those.
- twrife, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1The free things looked cool. Might try that out.
